Mother of Pearl: What is it?
Mother of pearl, also referred to as Nacre, is a unique material that combines both organic and inorganic elements. It is produced by certain mollusks as an inner shell layer and forms the stunning, iridescent outer coating of pearls.
History:
Historically, some cultures valued the luminescent mother-of-pearl shells more than pearls themselves. Prior to the 19th century, Japanese shell divers often discarded pearls upon discovery. Interestingly, it is said that Polynesian children used pearls as marbles. In the Americas, Abalone was consumed, and its shell was utilized as inlay for carved items made from wood, ivory, and bone.
Spiritual meaning:
Mother of pearl is considered a protective stone, embodying the gentle healing energy of the sea. It is believed to relieve stress while promoting relaxation, soothing, and calmness. Additionally, mother of pearl encourages imagination, sensitivity, and adaptability.
